April “Baby” Showers…

In my house, we have a saying that is supposed to be the first thing that comes out of your mouth on the first day of each new month, “Rabbit, rabbit.” I don’t know its provenance beyond my own parents, but it got me thinking–what folk musicians’ birthdays does this month hold?

According to the “birthdays” link on folklib.net’s page, there are many musicians and singer/songwriters who will be celebrating (or honored, in the case of those who have passed) this coming month.

to go back a couple days…
March 30th-Eric Clapton (I’d say the unplugged acoustic version of Leila is kinda folky anyway…)
April 1st-Bob Nolan
April 2nd- Emmylou Harris
April 3rd-Richard Thompson
April 4th – Muddy Waters
April 6th-Merle Haggard and Big Walter Horton
April 7th-Billie Holiday
April 9th-Rockin’ Sidney
April 10th-Steven Gustafson
April 11th-Mark Powers
April 12th-Tiny Tim, Vince Gill, and Amy Ray
April 13th-Eudora Welty
April 14th-Loretta Lynn
April 15th-Bessie Smith
April 16th-Dusty Springfield
April 19th-Gary Brewer, Dar Williams, and Ashley Judd
April 22nd-Cotton Ginnee Mills
April 23rd-Roy Orbison
April 24-Barbra Streisand
April 25th-Vassar Clements
April 28th-Gene Parker
April 29th-Duke Ellington
April 30th-Willie Nelson

True, I did not confine this list to folk music, but really, who am I to ignore Duke Ellington’s birthday? You now have legitimate reasons to celebrate all of April. Enjoy!
